disagreeable there. Last evening we had some singing by Mr. Frankfort
and others. They sing ballads well. Mr. Frankfort is from Pennsylvania,
very handsome, says “already”, and several Penn. Phrases.
The Ident. Riley and some others have gone in the Mountains
hunting. We have planned a picnic on the Mountains for the 4th.
Wrote 9 letters, yesterday, hope I shall get some soon, am
nearly discouraged to think none have come yet but one inclosed to Aunt
from Louise.
Tuesday – June 5 – We washed today and consequently I am
very tired tonight.
The men are busy at work on Mr. Fount Petersons house putting
down inside, gunny bags for floor and the same for windows and doors,
but it look real cozy inside and Mrs. Peterson is quite happy to get
to housekeeping so soon. They will sleep there tonight.
I have not had any letters yet; Will does not feel any the
worse for his trip, I really feared it would make him sick.
Had a lady call me today, very pleasant Mrs. Capt. Drake,
lives only a mile from here across the river, but it is so high they are
obliged to go around by the bridge at LaPorte, 4 miles up.
Wednesday 6 – Today I ironed, and washed out some dresses,
have ripped up my traveling dress for riding skirt, shall try to ride
some with Will after a while.
Have had no flowers for some time. Saw some Gentlemen go past
with a bouquet today; think a good deal of the roses at home this month.
By the way, saw something of myself in Print , had a paper from
home with one of my letters published, felt quite elated, but thought
it nothing to be elated over in the composition.
