The road was very smooth at first and I thought we were getting

along nicely, when we stopped, and on inquiring, I found there was a long

freight train off the tracks. We laid there four hours and were afraid we

would have to all night, but after starting got along well till next morn-

ing one of our cars broke some way and we were about half an hour getting

it in shape to come on so we reached St. Jo. 9:00 A.M. Instead of 5:00

A.M. as we should have done.

At St. Jo., I went to the hotel, and found my brother's friends

business house. They took me kindly to board with one of the firm.

April 21 . Saturday evening I put a line in the mail for Mr.
                                             st
Peterson and the gentlemen I go to Denver with, then went to bed and did

some tall sleeping to repay me for the nights I passed on board the cars.

Next Sunday morning was very pleasant, the river is very high

at present and the boats look beautiful coming in and going out.

I like St. Joseph very much, it has beautiful hills; in the
afternoon, we took a long walk around hills to see the place; some of the

residences are beautiful and the river is to me a never failing source of

                    pleasure.

Monday morning Mr. Peterson came around, thinks we will hardly

get off this week. He took me to the depot to see about my baggage, found

I had not got it checked through and it was left at Quincy; left orders

for it to be sent for directly and gave them the checks to send. On my

return Mr. Bear thought I must have something to prove them when they came,

so he went back with me to the Depot and we got the number of the checks.

Then I went up on town to do my shopping, first in St. Jo.; found it a
